Global Leader in Aluminum Surface Science, Anodizing, and Metallurgical Education

When it comes to aluminum surface treatment, anodizing science, and interfacial engineering, few experts are as widely respected as Dr. Judy Runge. With more than 40 years of experience spanning aerospace, electronics, consumer products, and advanced manufacturing, Dr. Runge has helped shape how aluminum is processed, analyzed, and engineered for high-performance applications worldwide.

Secat is proud to spotlight Dr. Runge for her global impact on aluminum metallurgy and for her role as a consultant supporting Secat’s Aluminum Metallurgy Certificate Program.

A Career Built on Aluminum Expertise

Dr. Runge began her career at Northrop Corporation, working in electronic materials and processes—laying the groundwork for a lifelong focus on aluminum alloys, surface science, and materials performance. Over the decades that followed, she became known as one of the industry’s most trusted authorities in anodizing, aluminum finishing, and metallurgical problem-solving.

A defining chapter of her career was her 11½-year tenure at Apple (7 years as a contractor, 4 ½ as full-time employee), where she played a key role in advancing materials selection, surface engineering, and finishing performance for some of the most widely recognized brands in the world. She retired from Apple in 2023.

Today, Dr. Runge leads CompCote International, Inc., her independent consulting firm, where she provides metallurgical consulting and failure analysis, expert guidance on aluminum anodizing and finishing processes, and technical support for manufacturers, finishers, and product designers. Her work continues to influence aluminum producers, OEMs, and finishing operations across the global aluminum supply chain.

Internationally Known in Anodizing Science

Dr. Runge is internationally recognized for her expertise in anodic oxidation of aluminum and the relationship between alloy chemistry, microstructure, anodic oxide growth and long-term performance. She has presented, lectured, and taught technical courses around the world, helping connect academic research with practical industrial application.

One of her most significant professional achievements is the publication of her landmark textbook, The Metallurgy of Anodizing Aluminum, released by Springer Nature in 2018. The book is widely regarded as the premier reference for anodizing engineering and science.   The second edition is scheduled for release this year.

Awards, Leadership, and Global Recognition

Dr. Runge’s contributions to aluminum metallurgy and technical education have earned her numerous professional honors. In 2021, she received the highest scientific honor presented by the National Association for Surface Finishing (NASF), the Award of Scientific Achievement.  Dr. Runge is the second female scientist to receive this award in over 60 years of such recognition by the NASF.  In February 2025, she was named to the Fulbright Specialist Roster by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, where she is serving a three-year term supporting international academic and professional collaboration.

She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Aluminum Anodizers Council (AAC). Since 2008, Dr. Runge serves as Co-Chair of the AAC Education Committee and is an active member of the AAC Academic Committee, reflecting her continued commitment to strengthening technical knowledge and education within the aluminum industry.

Consultant Supporting Secat’s Aluminum Metallurgy Certificate Program

Secat is honored to work with Dr. Runge as a consultant supporting the Certificate in Aluminum Metallurgy Program. She contributes directly to foundational aluminum metallurgy content, offering deep expertise in surface science, anodizing behavior, alloy chemistry, physical metallurgy, and real-world failure mechanisms.

Her involvement strengthens the technical depth of Secat’s training programs and is passionate that participants gain knowledge grounded in both scientific understanding and industry practice.

A Legacy Still in the Making

From industry leadership to global technical education, Dr. Judy Runge’s influence spans the entire aluminum lifecycle—from alloy selection and surface engineering to anodizing performance and failure analysis. Her commitment to teaching, her depth of scientific knowledge, and her continued consulting work help shape the next generation of aluminum professionals.

Yet among her many professional accomplishments, the role she holds closest is that of mother to four and grandmother to eight.

Secat is proud to spotlight Dr. Runge as a trusted consultant and collaborator in our mission to advance aluminum research, education, and industry excellence
